The name of Ko Pha Ngan comes from the word 'Ngan', the southern dialect meaning 'sand bar', for there are many sand bars offshore around the island.

The boats services to and from the island can be somewhat sporadic at best depending upon the season. During the high seasons, when there is a greater number of tourists on the island, the boats are quite regular at their published times.

The Seatran ferry from Koh Samui and Donsak does not service the island all year round, sometimes when it is re-instated it only runs for a few days then it is cancelled again. This can be a problem as far as access to Samui by car, an impossible task that is only accomplished by taking your car to Donsak and then back to Samui, a round trip of 6 hours to travel 15km.

Please check the timetables for your chosen method of transport as they can change daily.
